What a City job actually looks like

This is a City van on a commercial excavation in Berrien County. Rather than describe the work, here is the work, with the parts of it named.

A branded City Plumbing van parked at a commercial excavation site beside a working excavator.

124 years on the same block

Founded in 1902. Still at 407 State Street, still run by the family.

Carey Ross is President and Michael Ross is Vice President, which makes this the third generation of the family to answer the phone here. The storefront has a real showroom behind the glass, and the vans go out from the alley behind it.

Three trades, one shop

Plumbing, heating and air conditioning, plus the air you breathe in between

Separate crews under separate supervisors, so a blocked drain and a dead furnace are two different technicians. One phone call either way.

What is on the shelf

The brands the vans actually carry

A showroom on State Street means the fixtures and equipment are things you can look at before you agree to them. City is a Rheem Pro Partner.

  • Rheem

Water heating and HVAC. City is a Rheem Pro Partner.

  • Carrier

Furnaces and cooling. Wells Fargo financing applies here.

  • Zoeller

    Sump and sewage ejector pumps.

  • American Standard

    Fixtures and fittings.

  • Toto

    Toilets and fixtures.

  • Kohler

    Fixtures and faucets.

  • Delta

    Faucets.

  • Elkay

    Sinks.

Paying for it

Nobody plans for the furnace. Financing exists so the timing is not the deciding factor.

Financing runs through Synchrony Financial for most products, and through Wells Fargo for Carrier equipment specifically. There are also senior citizen and military discount programmes. Ask the dispatcher when you book and they will tell you what applies before any work starts.

Also true

The crew takes part in the annual Real Men Wear Pink fundraiser and runs its own Flush Out Cancer event on State Street, raising money for Berrien County Cancer Service.

City is a Rheem Pro Partner, and was named to a regional Best Places to Work list in 2021.

6:45 in the morning

A failed water heater, forty gallons on the floor

Denise called in a panic with water going everywhere. The first thing she got was help shutting it off over the phone. A technician was at the house by 8:30 and finished before noon.

Good morning...my water heater failed yesterday morning around 6:45am and of course I was in somewhat of a panic...40 gallons of water were spewing everywhere. I called Jim first and he was able to assist me in just knowing how and what to turn off. I called City and they had a very knowledgeable and friendly tech at my home at 8:30a and was done by noon. Thank you for coming to the rescue.

Same day

Everything flowing again before two o'clock

Dan called in the morning. Josh arrived just after noon. There is no mystery to this one, which is rather the point of putting it here.

Called in the morning, Josh arrived just after noon and before 2pm everything was flowing and functional again. Great, prompt service at a reasonable price!

A part that no longer exists

A blower motor nobody makes any more

The easy answer is a new unit. Andrew repaired the obsolete motor instead and got the air conditioning running again.

Andrew went out of his way to repair a blower motor that is no longer available and has restored our air conditioning. Knowledgeable and friendly service. We will definitely use them again.

Before you call

The questions the dispatcher gets most

If the answer you need is not here, the office will tell you straight over the phone rather than book a visit to find out.

Both, plus air conditioning, out of the same State Street shop. A plumbing supervisor and an HVAC service supervisor run separate crews, so a water heater and a furnace are two different technicians but one phone call and one company standing behind the work.
